Innovate to Success

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Foundry34 recently attended the Innovate to Success conference organised by GlobalBlackSwan and hosted by Alistair Campbell. As well as the launch of the TDNA application which has been a major project for us over the last 8 months there were some really interesting speakers from very successful companies including Proctor and Gamble, Rio Tinto and Duke Corporate Education. The conference really got us thinking about the role of innovation at Foundry34. Without going into a major intellectual diatribe about the role of innovation in the digital sector, it is obviously an issue we deal with daily. If you aren’t growing, developing and adjusting every day you will soon be left behind. Around 80% of the work we do now wouldn’t have been possible 5 years ago. We are not in a sector that can develop a product then sell it largely unchanged for the next 20 years. The challenge for us as a business is how we can maintain depth of knowledge with such a fast changing landscape and obviously keep our clients informed and at the forefront without being in cycles of perpetual change and adjustment. Our major role becomes about making sense and bringing clarity to technologies and modes of operating that can see alien and confusing even for the most astute of companies. Foundry34 becomes about being able to innovate and problem solve in rapid fashion behind the scenes but to be able to work with clients and provide solutions for their businesses that are relevant and often using cutting edge technology but ones which can be ,managed and integrated into their business models and processes.

'Launch' Launched

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

This Friday (19th) saw the opening of ‘Launch’ one of the UK’s best design showcases. Coinciding with the DOTT07 events the exhibition manages to get the message of DOTT over without being over-conceptual and dry (unfortunately not every DOTT event has carried this off!). Design can and does tackle some of our biggest problems but can be engaging and fun at the same time. Whether this is making us aware of material usage and recycling in a quirky mad professoresque way with a recycling design factory (Cohda, www.cohda.com), being just plain cool (Deadgood, www.deadgoodltd.co.uk), reinvigorating objects from our past (James Design, www.jamesdesignuk.com) or making the audience the creators (If You Could, www.ifyoucould.co.uk) every trap needs a lure. If we as designers want ordinary people to engage with design we have to be interesting first. We think Launch gets this just right.
….In any case any event that involves hauling huge shipping containers into the front of a disused fire-station and transforming a generally bleak city centre location into a hip design venue gets our vote.

DOTT 07

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Foundry34 is really pleased to see the DOTT 07 (Designs Of The Time 07) programme kick off in the North East this month. This series of events is dedicated to, in their words, ‘explore what life in a sustainable region could be like – and how design can help us get there’. It’s great to see an event like this outside of London, firstly because it enables designers to engage with a wider public and show how design can make real and relevant contributions to our communities and secondly to show we have some of the brightest talents in design working in the North-East at the moment. Get along to an event if you can. www.dott07.com
